OVERVIEW

Located in the historic walled city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, the Stepwell Art Gallery reimagines an existing historic haveli as a gallery and café, participating in the city’s efforts to become an art tourism center. The gallery becomes an extension of the adjacent stepwell—a traditional rainwater catchment and also a social gathering space. The blue railings and mullions take their cues from the blue walls of the neighborhood in a city known as “Blue City”. Both the structural walls and the porous façade uses locally-quarried sandstone, following the traditional building technique of using the material for both well-ventilated screens as well as thermal mass.
